6 foods you should eat this winter

Root Vegetables & Leafy Greens- Carrots, onions, spinach, green beans, are some of the varieties that can help you stay both healthy and warm this winter. These foods are loaded with rich sources of nutrients like beta-carotene and vitamin C. Adding them to your dals, vegetables and soups can benefit you with an assortment of food that compliments your fitness routine. Also beetroots, spinach, carrots, and turnips can withstand the cold, so local farmers can provide fresh produce so that you can reap the benefits.

Dry fruits and nuts- Ever wondered why dry fruits & nuts are exchanged on Diwali? As the occasion marks the beginning of winter, we wish our loved ones with just the right eatables needed in winters. To keep your body warm during the day, you can add nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pistachios to your breakfast table. To give a twist to your normal cereal or warm milk with dalia (porridge) or oats, try and add dried fruits like apricots, raisins and figs.

Soup- Is the perfect winter food. Chicken broth, vegetable broth, or water as the base along with a lot of vegetable will work as the best recipe. Pair your soup with a side of 100 percent whole grain toast for a dose of grains. 

Tulsi, ginger and cinnamon- Tulsi has anti-bacterial, anti-biotic and anti-viral properties that helps in keeping the body healthyfrom healing cough, cold, sore throat, kidney stone, improving digestion, tulsi also plays the role of a stress reliever and prevents acne. You can add this versatile herb not only in your teas, but also in your salads and dips. On the other hand, ginger seeds can be used in diverse ways from teas to food to having raw ginger if you have bad throat. And cinnamon helps to increase body’s metabolism and generate heat, add it to your coffee or tea and enjoy the beautiful flavor it brings!

These three along with some cloves, lemon grass, tea leaves, jaggery boiled in water as a Kadha helps in bringing down sever cold.

Eggs- During the cold winter months, eating an egg a day does keep you warm but it also gives you the much-needed energy. Eggs contain nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin B12 and Selenium along with protein in high amount which can work as the key to maintain a healthy immunity system. Saffron- Kesar dudh is usually consumed in winters as saffron is a stimulant tonic and is very effective to treat cold and fever; saffron mixed in milk and applied over the forehead relieves cold quickly. The added benefit is that it also keeps the skin healthy and glowing.
